In the classroom, neurodiverse students suffer in different ways. They are either bullied, misunderstood as lazy, and don't have teachers and peers’ support, which could impact their self-esteem. Teachers have to take care of the whole classroom so they are unable to cater to the individual needs of ADHD, dyslexic and autism students.
But, this situation has changed with the introduction of EdTech tools in the classroom. Various AI tools could help teachers in creating personalized curricula for learners. These tools could assess students' ways of learning and the time they take to complete an activity. These observations help them in creating a personalized curriculum.
Moreover, these tools can engage the multi-senses of students to help them in the classroom. A lot of neurodiverse learners need to engage their multiple senses to understand a concept. They need visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory or tactile learning methods. They also need a specific background color, font color and unique content presentation style to understand and read the content. A lot of them also need gamified learning to understand and learn various concepts.
Teddy AI takes care of these aspects. This AI tool is designed for all neurodiverse kids who want to explore their abilities and learn new things easily.
Let's Explore Teddy AI
Teddy AI was created by the Otermans Institute, which is famous for creating affordable children's content and AI tools. They conducted a survey before creating this platform. 16 plus neurodiverse students or those people who have learning disorders could take part in that survey. The main aim of that research was to find the best method of presenting content to special needs students.
The focus of the questionnaire was on the following aspects: font size, background color, font type, line spacing, what kind of reward they would love, how they wanted the information to be presented and how the title should be written. The questionnaire wanted to know which font and size are suitable for neurodiverse students to read. What should be the background color of the content that could excite them. Whether they should present the information in the form of bullet points, one line per page or small paragraphs. And, how the title should be presented to them.
Based on these surveys, they created Teddy AI, a conversational tool that uses AI and machine learning to help students learn new concepts easily. It uses gamified learning and various other features to cater to the needs of every kind of student.
The best thing about this tool is it has an animated Teddy that speaks just like a five-year-old kid. It is friendly and takes learners to a new world to explore. This tool makes learning a stimulating and engaging experience by encouraging students to ask, explore and take risks. It helps in developing various educational and life skills such as problem solving.
How Does Teddy AI Work?
Teddy AI is a free AI tool that can be downloaded on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. You can also sign up on the website to use this tool.
Once you have downloaded the app or signed up on the website, it will ask you to give access to your microphone. Once you have done it, it will ask you some personal questions. It includes your name, age and level of proficiency in the English language. As it is designed for kids, you should let your child give the details.
Once you have given your details, Teddy will give you further instructions. After this, your kid could either start having a conversation with Teddy or click on the “Explore” button.
When you click on the explore button, it will take you to different worlds. These are Canteen, Zoo, School, Playground and many more. Your kid can select any one from them. Once they have clicked on any world, different topics and activities relevant to it would be open.
Let's suppose your kid clicks on the Zoo. Here, the “animals” topic will be on the screen. They need to click on it and various activities would be in front of them. They could choose what type of activity they want. These activities include scrambled words, quizzes, select animals, true and false, fill-in-the-blanks, and lessons.
If your kid opens a quiz, Teddy will ask them various multiple-choice questions related to the zoo and animals. Each correct answer would reward them.
In Lesson, Teddy would let them explore the surroundings of the Zoo, and provide them with different real-life scenarios. Your kid can also do role-playing activities with Teddy that will sharpen their problem-solving skills.
Once they have a lot of coins and rewards, they can unlock new badges and win different accessories for their Teddy.
Key Features of Teddy AI
Gamified Learning
There are badges, stars and different kinds of rewards in the app. Whenever a student gives a correct answer, they earn coins. After earning a bunch of coins, they can earn badges or rewards. These rewards could be helpful videos and hints. They will also get verbal affirmation and confetti after every correct answer. The app also provides virtual rewards tokens that they can spend on virtual stores to buy accessories for their teddy.
Conversational Learning
Teddy AI also provides interactive learning opportunities where you can interact with your teddy and have a friendly conversation. These conversations could be either on different social issues or could be related to any specific topic. Teddy will ask you different questions or can give you answers to your queries. It could also tap into the curiosity of kids by directing them to observe the surroundings and find interesting things in them.
Guardian Dashboard
Teddy AI app is for kids and Guardian dashboard app is for parents. This AI tool has made sure to involve parents in learning by providing them with a different app. They could download it on their mobiles and monitor their kid's apps.
This guardian dashboard app contains the analytics and progress rate of their learners. It also allows parents to select activities and curriculum for their kids according to their preferences.
Personalized Learning
The tool uses machine learning to understand readers’ progress, their preferred learning methods and how long they need to complete a task. It also allows teachers and parents to select personalized activities and curricula for students through a guardian dashboard.
There are various kinds of learning activities on this app, such as quizzes, interactive games, visuals, and written and spoken lessons. So, students or parents could select any method according to their preferences. Moreover, they could customize the dashboard by selecting their preferred font, font size, and background color.
Free App
The best thing about this tool is it is free to use. You can download the app and your kids can play games and interact with Teddy without spending any money on it. You could sign up on the website and download the parents’ dashboard for free.
Multi-sensory Engagement
The tool engages multiple senses of students that could help each and everyone to learn new things with ease. It provides curriculum and instructions in the form of spoken words and captions. This aspect engages visual and auditory learners.
It has a text-to-speech option when you are conversing with the AI buddy. You can either write your message or speak it out loud in the microphone. It provides you answers in spoken form and text form.
Different types of learning games, such as quizzes and flashcards, could engage students of different learning needs.
How Teddy AI is Helping Different Neurodiverse Students?
This app is helping different kinds of neurodiverse students. For example, it provides visuals in different activities and during conversations that could help students with visual learning preferences to grasp the concept.
It also has calming music in the background that could increase the retention of students who are suffering from autism. This could also enhance the concentration level of ADHD students.
You can also have long conversations with this tool. That could help maintain the attention of ADHD students for a long time. This interaction also increases socialism in autistic students and helps them in overcoming their anxiety.
Spaced repetition of questions could help students with dyslexia to retain the knowledge. Text-to-speech is there that helps students with reading disabilities such as dyspraxic kids.
